Reviving Hopes. Realizing Rights. A Report on the First Phase of Community Monitoring under NRHM

The National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) was launched in 2005 to improve the delivery of health services and provide universal access to health care in rural areas in India. To this end the NRHM promoted an accountability process where community monitoring would be a key component, allowing community members to monitor the progress of NRHM interventions. The nine states selected for the community monitoring phase – lasting 18 months – were Assam, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya, Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu. In each state three to five districts were selected, covering 1,600 villages and 300 public health facilities.
